My Story
My name is Su Jung Suk and was born and raised in South Korea. When I was 21, I moved to Hong Kong to study Mandarin at Chinese University and upon graduating worked at the Korean Consulate for 10 years. Listening to the families while working in the visa section, I sensed a need for mental and psychological support for people who left their home countries and lived overseas as they sought to integrate to a new way of living. When I relocated to Singapore in 2009, I personally experienced these challenges and decided to study Counselling Psychology to understand more about how they could be resolved.

As I began to work with adults, I increasingly realised their childhood experiences were the cause of most of their challenges. I realised there was an opportunity to have great impact if I could support children and young people with their emotional and behaviour challenges earlier in their lives. This led me to focus on Play Therapy so that I could be more equipped to connect and support children and young people through an approach which is more aligned with the way naturally learn and develop. As Play Therapy is typically non-directive it also prevents language being a barrier and allows the free expression of emotions through symbols and metaphors. This is essential when young children have no language to express their emotions and have not yet developed appropriate social or behavioural boundaries or are from different cultural backgrounds.

I am married to a husband who is British, Hong Kong Chinese and the mother of 2 teenage boys now based in the UK. I speak Korean, English, Mandarin and Cantonese allowing me to work across cultures and understand the practical identity challenges of Third Culture Kids.
